My Mom and the Olympics!

I’ve always had a deep love for the Olympics. Some of my fondest memories growing up revolve around the excitement of both the summer and winter games. It’s no wonder I’ve embraced the philosophy of “life’s 2 short 4 just 1 sport” long before it became our popular mantra. One fun story I often share is about the legendary “Miracle on Ice” game, where my mom was convinced that the U.S. team’s victory was thanks to her throwing holy water at the television. But today, I want to share another Olympic-related story, one that highlights my mom again – but this time – her dream for her sons to participate in the Olympics.

It was during the 1976 games when my mom, inspired by the athletic feats she watched on TV, came home with a surprise: a bundle of bamboo poles from the local garden store. We were puzzled at first, wondering what she had in mind. Then, in her thick Irish brogue, she announced, “I think you all would be great pole vaulters.” My brothers and I exchanged bewildered looks, unsure if she was serious. But my mom had bought the poles, so we had to give it a try.

Me and four of my five brothers circa 1976 – with my Mom who was always looking to inspire us! That’s me sitting with the tie on!!

We headed outside and attempted to pole vault, using our makeshift equipment. Despite our best efforts, within 15 minutes, all the bamboo poles had snapped, and our best jumps barely cleared three or four feet. It was a hilarious and memorable experience, but more than that, it was a testament to the magic of the Olympic Games. They inspire kids to dream, to believe in possibilities beyond their everyday experiences. They expose children to a wider array of sports than they might otherwise encounter and encourage parents to support their children’s explorations and aspirations.

The Olympics also foster feelings of patriotism and healthy competition. When done right, they embody ideals of excellence, unity, and the pursuit of dreams. As we approach another Olympic season, I hope these ideals continue to inspire young families to explore new sports and activities they might never have considered. After all, the true beauty of the Olympics lies in their ability to spark dreams and ignite passions in all of us.
