Celebrating National Sport Sampling Day: The Magic of the Olympics and the Road to Los Angeles 2028

Watching the closing ceremonies of this year’s Summer Olympics, I was full of different emotions. Full disclosure, among those emotions was a tinge of regret—I just didn’t get to watch as much of the games as I’d hoped. Being on various group texts with my seven married siblings and their spouses, my 26 nieces and nephews, my own kids, and even one that includes some of my 77 first cousins—Olympic updates were constantly blowing up my phone (via my vibrating watch). The most common message I’d look down at was: “Is anyone live?” But with 2-4-1 programming in full swing during prime time in Paris, I was never “live”! Instead, I found myself catching up on highlights late at night–in many cases, with the results already spoiled for me.

All that said, despite missing out on the real-time excitement, that swirl of emotions i mentioned above took over any real regret I had. Given what I commit to each day, I was filled with a strange sense of pride and joy knowing how many people, including my own family members, were engaged and enjoying so many different sports. It was a reminder of just how powerful and unifying the Olympics can be. This global event truly is the original “2-4-1, Life’s 2 short 4 just 1 sport” experience—where, over two weeks, the world comes together and like at no other time, celebrates ALL sports in a way that helps you recognize just how important a role sports play in our lives.

In this spirit, I’m thrilled that once again the 241st day of the year—August 28th this year—has been declared National Sport Sampling Day in honor of 2-4-1 by the National Day Calendar.. Just as the Olympics allow us to explore and appreciate a diverse array of sports, National Sport Sampling Day encourages folks everywhere to experience that same magic by trying multiple sports instead of focusing on just one. We hope that, over time, organizations like the International Olympic Committee and the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee will see National Sport Sampling Day as their own, seeing this day as a way to encourage kids to move from just watching sports to actually playing them!!

Looking ahead, we’re setting our sights on the next four years, leading up to the Summer Olympics on American soil in Los Angeles. As an organization dedicated to introducing kids to both traditional and niche sports—evidenced by our partnership with USA Fencing and our grassroots efforts to grow that sport—we see 2-4-1 as a key player in supporting the Olympic movement here in the United States. Our goal is to ensure that more kids from all backgrounds have access to a wide variety of sports, just like what we see in the Olympics.  Paris set an incredibly high cross-bar, but we are optimistic that Los Angeles will make the 2028 games their own, and above all else – do everything they can to include as many people as possible!  Knowing the great work of organizations like the LA84 Foundation and the Play Equity Fund, we are filled with optimism about the next 4 years!

So, as we celebrate National Sport Sampling Day this August 28th, let’s carry forward the Olympic spirit. Join us in embracing the joy of discovering new sports, support opportunities for all kids to get involved, and continue building a culture where sport sampling isn’t just encouraged—it’s celebrated. Whether you’re watching a niche event in the middle of the night or catching highlights with your family, remember that the magic lies in the diversity of experiences and the connections we make through sport. Here’s to the journey toward Los Angeles 2028 and to making sure that every child has the chance to experience the joy of sport in all its forms.  Now get out there and play!!
