I had a great conversation last week with one of our long-time sport directors who poignantly shared that the reason he loves working at 2-4-1 is because he gets to play. He told me it is the kind of camp he would have loved to attend as a kid. Coming from a background of coaching in high school, where there’s a heavy emphasis on instruction, he appreciates how we have evolved from a highly structured, instructional model to a play-based one. And as he shared this, I realized that it was because of directors like him that we made that evolution. They literally helped us put play back into sports!
This conversation was a powerful reminder of how important it is to learn from those around us. Trusting the great teachers and coaches who do the boots-on-the-ground work has been essential to our growth and success. In fact, as I reflect on where we are today—with camp directors across North America, a dedicated board of directors, directors of school-based programming, and the incredible team at 2-4-1 headquarters—it’s clear that collaboration and trust have been at the heart of it all.
I often quip that the complexity of 2-4-1 is in the simplicity of our delivery model. But that simplicity didn’t happen by accident, nor did it happen overnight. It came from listening to and responding to the incredible practitioners who have been delivering the 2-4-1 model since the beginning. By embracing feedback and allowing ourselves to adapt, we’ve been able to offer the best possible programs to kids. And while we started with a focus on anti-specialization, we’ve grown to a mission that is even broader: putting play back into sports and using sports as a vehicle to teach social-emotional learning skills. We do this in a way that’s fun, engaging, and that develops leadership—from the coaches directing the programs to the kids participating in them.
As we look at the concept of physical literacy—defined as the ability, confidence, and desire to be active for life—it’s humbling to see 2-4-1 recognized as an international leader in this space. Our directors work tirelessly to advance this mission, ensuring that our impact isn’t just felt in the present but ripples out for generations to come.
The big lesson for me in all of this is simple: trust those around you. Be willing to partner, collaborate, and learn from each other. That is how real growth happens. It’s almost unfathomable to think that what started in 2008 as a little one-week, mom-and-pop summer camp—an effort by Kerry and me to encourage kids to stop specializing in sports too young—has evolved into a global organization that now employs nearly 300 people a year across the globe. With so many incredible directors and partners, together we’re building something far greater than we ever could have imagined, and it’s all because of the team that continues to inspire and drive this mission forward.
